NPA is Part of Zócalo LA Panel Discussion on Ports’ Clean Truck Plan, July 2007

Port of Los Angeles Harbor Commission President David Freeman, Coalition for Clean and Safe Ports Co-Chair Patricia Castellanos, Great Freight Inc. President and California Trucking Association member Michael Lightman, and NPA President Nancy Pfeffer were panelists on this evening program at Banning’s Landing.  Zócalo LA is a public affairs program broadcast by local NPR affiliate KPCC.  The panel was moderated by Rick Wartzman, Director of The Drucker Institute at Claremont Graduate University.  Ms. Pfeffer led off the discussion by presenting facts and figures on the national economic importance of the San Pedro Bay ports and their substantial local environmental health impacts.  Mr. Freeman gave an overview of the ports’ truck plan, and he, Ms. Castellanos and Mr. Lightman engaged in a spirited debate about whether the plan will improve the lot of harbor truckers and increase port security, or whether it will disrupt port operations and put some firms out of business.  Questions from the audience were numerous and came from both supporters and opponents of the port plan.  See the Zócalo web site or KPCC web site to access archives of the radio broadcast or the LA 36 cable TV web site for video archives.
